Animal Life

Consisting a mix of deciduous, secondary semi-evergreen and wet deciduous forest types, which contain plant species with thick undergrowth, the sighting of large mammals is poor in the forests that surround the campus and thus viewing is not possible for the enthusiastic guest that are here for a short span of time. While wildlife is plentiful, sightings are poor, thanks to the ability of animals to camouflage in the thick undergrowth of shrubs that are part of this forest.

MAMMALS IN FORESTS AROUND THE PROPERTY

  1. Sloth Bear- Rare. Occasional sightings near the caves and the grasslands.
  2. Indian Gaur- Commonly sighted near the grasslands, in forest clearings and near water.
  3. Barking Deer – Commonly sighted near forest clearings and waterholes.
  4. Sambhar- Occasionally sighted on grasslands and the main road to the property.
  5. Common Leopard- extremely rare. Sighted by guests, staff and locals.
  6. Indian Tiger- Extremely rare. Sighted on few occasions by staff and locals.
  7. Rudy Mongoose- frequently sighted at daybreak and dusk on the forest paths.
  8. Palm Civet- commonly sighted on main road and near village settlements.
  9. Small Indian Civet- commonly sighted on the main road leading to the property.
  10. Wild Dog- Rarely sighted, the wild dog is a transit mammal in our forests.
  11. Jungle cat- extremely rare. Sighted by researchers and locals on a few occasions.
  12. Mouse deer- Rare. Occasional sightings on various trails in the property.
  13. Wild Boar- frequently sighted at dawn and dusk at various locales in property.
  14. Indian hare- commonly sighted on the plateaux in the property.
  15. Giant squirrel- documented in forests near the Haltar nallah.
  16. Flying Squirrel- a nocturnal mammal, documented in dense evergreen forests.
  17. Black faced Langur- commonly found in small groups in tree canopy
  18. Indian Pangolin- rare and found in secondary forests in the area.
  19. Slender Loris- an endangered mammal, 3 pairs have been documented in the past.
  20. Bonnet macaque- commonly found in and around the property in troupes.
